HCV Scam Alert

ATTENTION
Wake County Housing Authority has been informed that emails are being sent to persons seeking housing assistance. Section 8/Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) participants have been identified as being impacted.

The Wake County Housing Authority would never ask participants for payment through its HCV program. Please do not open, disregard, and report the incident to the Authority at (919) 269-6404 or info@hacwnc.org.

WCHA WOULD NEVER DO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Requests for payment: Legitimate housing authorities do not charge application or processing fees for vouchers.
  • Unusual payment methods: Be cautious if asked to pay via wire transfer, prepaid card, or gift cards.
  • Guaranteed approval: Scammers often promise guaranteed approval or immediate access to housing, which is not a standard process for government programs.
  • Unsolicited contact: Avoid responding to unsolicited texts, emails, or social media messages with links to apply.
  • Non-official websites: Be suspicious of websites that do not end in ".gov" or lack a verifiable housing authority name.
  • Misspellings and poor formatting: Scams often contain errors in grammar, spelling, or odd formatting.
  • Pressure to act quickly: Scammers use pressure to make you act before you can think, often mentioning fake deadlines for applications.

When in doubt, contact Wake County Housing Authority before any prior transactions.
